The ULTRAN® - Slice Low Void Volume (LVV) membrane cassette
system is used to process volumes between 100 mL and 5 litres with the
use of both ultra and microfiltration membranes. The membrane cassettes
are equipped with special high-performance membranes working on the
crossflow principle.
The cassette geometry of the Slice-LVV system corresponds exactly to
the ULTRAN - Slice system but is, in contrast, equipped with smaller
apertures. This reduces the retention volume in the system as a whole
and allows small volumes to be processed in real crossflow operation.
The ULTRAN - Slice LVV system is ideally suitable for applications in
which a subsequent scaling-up to ULTRAN - Slice is intended. The LVV
cassette corresponds to 1/10 of a Slice cassette.
The stainless steel filter holder is free from welding seams and
newly developed connector types make the link-up to conventional
Tri-Clamp connections. In this way ferrite-free and therefore
corrosion-free contact surfaces can be ensured; this is of crucial
importance when buffers containing salts are being used.

Two cassette configurations are offered which differ in their
retentate channel design. With Screen cassettes the channel is filled
with a polymeric screen which creates turbulent flow at the membrane's
surface, thus preventing gel layer formation and providing a constant
filtration rate. This configuration is suitable for molecular soluted
biomolecules
The open configuration of the so-called open channel cassettes is
provided by spacers allowing for filtration even with particle loaded
product flows. This configuration is particularly suitable for
applications such as cell harvesting, particulate removal and filtration
of highly viscous solutions.
