CrossFlow Filtration
CrossFlow filtration (tangential flow filtration) involves
recirculation of the feed stream pumped across the membrane
surface. The "sweeping action" created by fluid flow across the
membrane surface promotes consistent productivity over the long
term. Tangential flow, which is utilized in ULTRAN®
cassettes, creates a gentle turbulence at the membrane surface,
thus minimizing concentration polarization.
In operation the retentate, including molecules and fragments
retainted by the membrane, continues through the recirculation
path. The solvent and solutes, which passed through the membrane
are collected in a reservoir for the so called permeate. To
realize a CrossFlow filtration we process our membranes in
cassettes, which can be operated in stainless steel filter
holders.
ULTRAN® membrane cassettes are available in a wide
range of ultrafiltration (5 - 500 kD) and microfiltration (0.2 -
0.45 µm) pore sizes. To access the range of Whatman CrossFlow
