Nucleolin is an abundant, non-ribosomal protein of the nucleolus. It has
an apparent molecular weight of 110 kDa and a multi-domain structure,
which reflects its remarkably diverse functions. Nucleolin is involved
in the organization of the nuclear chromatin, rDNA transcription,
packaging of the pre-RNA, ribosome assembly, nucleocytoplasmic
transport, cytokinesis, nucleogenesis and apoptosis. A predominantly
nuclear protein, the presence of Nucleolin at the surface of cancer
cells suggests that it could be valuable as a marker for the diagnosis
of cancer.
